Acme Metals, Inc.

Located in Riverdale, Illinois, Acme Metals Incorporated was involved in the manufacturing and distribution of steel products.  Acme was comprised of two separate segments – the steel-making segment and the steel-manufacturing segment.  The company’s product line centered on the manufacture of flat-rolled steels in both strips and sheets.  This company, which declared bankruptcy in 1998, specialized in the production of “carbon” steels, particularly mid-and high-carbon alloy steels and high-strength, low-alloy steels.

Acme Metals employees, like workers at most steel plants prior to the 1980s, were exposed to asbestos fibers on a regular basis through the use of asbestos clothing – including leggings, aprons, coats, gloves, and masks – meant to protect them from burns caused by molten liquid.  Other asbestos-containing products may have included ovens, ladles, boilers, steam pipes, and a variety of additional products that made use of asbestos due to its heat- and fire-resistant properties.

Exposed employees may have included machine setters, operators, and tenders; millwrights; pourers and casters; furnace operators; welders; and inspectors.
